Recreation & Fitness

Even if you don't have military connections in your family, don't let that stop you from playing golf on a military-run course. There are approximately 160 golf courses operated by the combined efforts of the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps. Many can walk and offer a unique golfing experience for civilians at a special price. It is rare to find a green fee for the military course of more than $50. A few of these make our annual best of lists.

Most military facilities accept some civilian games, and many allow the public even if they are not accompanied by military personnel. In fact, many facilities rely on public green fees to cover operating costs. In fact, federal law mandates that the military golf course be self-sustaining with funds not appropriated by the Department of Defense, which are raised through morale, welfare and recreation activities. Your support of these facilities helps keep them open for military families and the public to enjoy.

Over the past few years, Golf Advisor has received nearly 3,000 reviews from golfers from both civilian and military backgrounds and compiled a top ten based on their all-time overall ratings and number of reviews. Overall, Golf Advisor reviewers rate military golf courses highly for staff friendliness (average 4.2/5) and value (average 4.35/5).

"It's a little shorter than I normally like to play, but the bottom line is I had to hit every club in my bag. The greens were some of the best I've ever played and the rest of the course was in great shape. It's hard to find a comparable golf course on the Monterey Peninsula, so this was a gem."

Also of note is one of the best 36-hole golf facilities in the West at Fort Ord, which was a Bayonet & Blackhorse Army base. The fort was closed in the 60s and in 1997 the land was bought by the coastal city. The courses were soon rebuilt and are now privately managed.
